May 2010 Fitness Update

Fitness Demos 10-1:30 On Saturday, May 22 from 10 AM to 1:30 PM, Friends of Brown Street Park will be hosting a day of free fitness activities to showcase the new and revitalized outdoor equipment for teens and adults at the Brown Street Park.

One new element to be featured is the set of traveling rings - Brown Street Park is one of three locations within the US that has an installation of traveling rings! BSP will be hosting traveling instructors and enthusiasts from NYC's Riverside Park who will be performing demonstrations and offering lessons on how to use this new equipment.

The day will kick off at 10am with CrossFit Providence providing a workout until 11. Starting at 11:30, the NYC instructors will begin their demonstrations and training. At 12:30 the park's fitness partner, the East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA, will conduct 15 minute demos of outdoor aerobics, yoga, conditioning and hybrid training. The YMCA will also be hosting activities for kids from 12:30-1:30.

Bring your water bottles and have fun learning how to get fit at the park. We will also hold a brief ribbon cutting with our friends from the Providence Parks Department at 11:30am.

Thanks to a recent major renovation effort by the Providence Department of Parks and Recreation, the Brown Street Park adult/teen fitness area is complete...for now. Like all FBSP initiatives, the fitness area is the result of a combined effort of FBSP, the Department of Parks and Recreation, donations from community businesses and individuals, non-profit partnerships, in kind contributions, grants, and most importantly, community volunteers. We used old, repurposed and select new elements with a focus on sustainability. The East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA will be kicking off free spring fitness classes on Monday, May 17th with a 5:30 PM class at the park. Classes will also be held on Wednesday mornings at 9:15 starting on the 19th. No child care will be provided for the spring class but there will be free child care for summer classes.

Starting May 18, CrossFit Providence will hold bootcamp sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 PM. The first class will be free; subsequent classes will be $8 apiece You must sign up for the 7 week session which goes thru July 4.
